The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme offers homeowners in Scotland a grant, an interest-free loan, or a mix of both to support the installation of clean heating systems and energy efficiency improvements.
For clean heating systems, such as heat pumps, homeowners can receive grant funding of up to £7,500, with the option of an additional £7,500 through an interest-free loan.
Homes in rural or island areas are eligible for an additional uplift of £1,500 for both clean heating and energy efficiency grants, allowing these households to access up to £18,000 in total grant funding.
Eligibility Requirements for the Home Energy Scotland (HES) Loan and Grant Scheme
You are eligible to apply for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme if you own an existing property located in Scotland and it serves as your only or primary private residence.
Receiving benefits is not a requirement to qualify for the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan Scheme.
Do I need an up-to-date EPC before applying for the Home Energy Scotland (HES) Grant and Loan Scheme?
While it's not strictly required, you will need a post-installation Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to confirm that the measures funded have been implemented. To claim your funding, the post-installation EPC must not list recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
If applicable, these recommended measures must be addressed before or during your heat pump installation to maintain eligibility for funding. Home Energy Scotland also offers additional funding for these improvements.
If loft and/or cavity wall insulation aren't suitable for your property but are still recommended in the EPC, you’ll need a statement from a qualified professional, like a certified insulation installer, explaining why. Your eligibility for an exemption will then be assessed.
So, while having an updated EPC isn’t mandatory when applying for the scheme, we strongly recommend obtaining one. You can check your current EPC status here: https://www.scottishepcregister.org.uk/
