Do I need planning permission prior to an install in Scotland?

No, you probably don't need planning permission to upgrade your home with a heat pump.

However, there may be some situations where you may need it. Here are the things to watch out for:

  • If the heat pump is attached to the house, it must not stick out more than 1 meter from the wall or roof. In conservation areas, it must also be located on the ground floor and on the rear of the building.
  • If the heat pump is within the curtilage (not attached to the house), it cannot be installed in front of or to the side of the house if that side faces a road. The unit, including equipment or housing, must also be under 3 metres in height.
  • Special rules apply if the building is a listed building or in a World Heritage Site, where the installation might not be allowed under this class.

If unsure, it is best to check with your local planning authority.
